Kudos to the Team at Southwest Gables

The following message of appreciation was emailed to Southwest Gables property manager Kim McIntosh by a satisfied resident:

Kim,
At this time of the year I usually come home from work late and it is usually almost dark outside. I came home early last night, so it was still complete daylight. I could see that the grass had been mowed, the grounds have been spruced up, and the property looked so nice. The complex always looks good after a “spruce up” following the long, dirty winter. I also noticed the new sign in front; it is a nice improvement and makes the complex look even better.

I just wanted to share my appreciation for how well the Southwest Gables staff maintains the property. Due to regular maintenance and improvements, the complex does not look 18 years old. Please forward my comments to the corporate office so that they know, along with your team, that your hard work in maintaining the complex is truly noticed and appreciated.

Many thanks for all that you do, Southwest Gables Team!

From Our Experts-Maintaining Balance for the Elderly

Thanks to Interim Healthcare for providing this month’s Expert Article.

Falls are a leading cause of injury and hospitalization for older Americans.  Approximately one in three Americans over the age of 65 falls each year.   In other words, falls are a serious health risk for older adults.

As we age, our bodies undergo many physiological changes that lead to increased fall risk. For example, vision and hearing decrease, affecting balance.   Reaction time is also affected because the messages our brain sends to our muscles don’t travel as efficiently.  Therefore, we don’t respond as quickly to losses of balance or obstacles in our path.  Additionally, there is natural reduction of muscle strength and flexibility, making simple activities, such as walking and getting out of chairs, more difficult.  Although these changes are a normal part of aging, falls don’t have to be.  There are many things you can do to stay safe, steady, and most importantly, on your feet.

Most falls occur within the home.  A few simple environmental changes can make a big difference in terms of safety.  First, remove clutter from walking paths and eliminate tripping hazards, such as loose throw rugs.  Keep frequently used items in the easiest to reach places.  Step stools can tip easily, so avoid them whenever possible.  In general, keep living spaces well lit. We can’t avoid obstacles if we can’t see them.  Use night lights, or keep a light by the bed in case you need to get up in the night.  Bathrooms are a common place for falls.  Non slip mats in and outside of the tub make wet surfaces more safe.  Additionally, grab bars along the wall provide extra support while climbing in/out of the shower. Falls often occur when people rush to answer phones or get to the bathroom.  Take your time when moving through your home

Staying healthy is also important for reducing fall risk.  See your MD regularly.  Those with chronic diseases spend more time in bed and are more likely to lose strength.  Know your medications.  People on 4 or more medications are more likely to experience side effects, such as lightheadedness or confusion, which can lead to falls. Consult your MD if you feel like you might be having these side effects.  Our feet get us where we need to go, so take care of them – especially if you are diabetic. Check them regularly and wear good fitting shoes with non-skid soles. If you are supposed to use a device, such as a cane or walker, use it!  They provide stability and will improve your stride and confidence while walking. A physical therapist can help determine what device is best for you and train you to use it properly.  Finally, stay active.  Keep joints mobile and muscles strong.  Balance gets better with practice, so be up on your feet everyday to challenge your balance.

Remember, falls don’t have to be a normal part of aging. The best way to prevent falls is to take measures to keep yourself and your home safe.

Happy Volunteer Week!

As we wrap up this week celebrating National Volunteer Week, we’d like to share StuartCo Employee’s volunteer activity.

Wednesday we held our annual sandwich making event to support the mission of 363Days and Simpson Housing Services. Here’s a little about each organization.

363 Ministries is a grass roots organization built on anonymous donations of time, talent and treasures. All donations are given and used with the purpose of feeding those less fortunate. Our starting goal was to help feed 150 homeless people in Minneapolis as many times a year as possible, with the ultimate goal of doing it everyday of the year. Today, we are helping to feed about 4,500 people per week through various shelters and food shelves!

Simpson Housing Service’s mission is to house, support and advocate for people experiencing homelessness. We know that with close, individual advocacy and support, men, women and families experiencing homelessness achieve housing stability. We are committed to Housing First: house people quickly, then provide services as needed.

Around 12 StuartCo employees participated this year with a goal of 500 sandwiches. We ended the afternoon with about 700 sandwiches to be donated! And just as we did last year, we had a great time assembling sandwiches for a great cause.

Thank you to all those that participated!

Congratulations Stuart H. Nolan Scholarship Recipients!

Coachman Trails Staff is Very Friendly, Helping and Responsive

We received a nice note from a resident, here it is.

I have been here since last 5 months and I am very happy with the property. Specially, the staff is very friendly, helping and responsive. The most attractive thing is that all utilities are free including heating except electricity which is normal. The trash chutes are inside the building, so my wife does not need to go outside in winter. The property is also secure. The rent is little bit high though but it is acceptable as they don’t charge you for heating in winter. Overall very good place to live with your family.

Thank you to this resident for sharing their thoughts about Coachman Trails. We happen to agree that overall it’s a great place to live!
